The European Networks of Excellence were thematic research networks designed to support academic and industrial research into novel technologies across Europe. The aim was to promote research integration and co-operation, including technology transfer. Funding was provided to successful applicants for administrative staff to manage and run the network. Research was not supported financially directly but facilitating activities were supported. These include seminars, workshops, meetings, technological visits and scientific exchanges.

We grew to over 80 members and a prominent USA authority mentioned that the USA had nothing like the European networks such as Monet.
