Research Assessment Exercise. CS applied to two separate panels, CS (14 staff) and Engineering (5 staff) but this was not well received. Seven grades 1, 2, 3b, 3a, 4, 5, and 5*. CS graded 4A. The credit for staff that moved institutions in the middle of the cycle could be shared between the two institutions. |

CASIS, the Centre for Advanced Software and Intelligent Systems, was launched. This was the successor to the CIS but combined with Cardiff to cover the whole of Wales. Dr Jianhua Shao was Deputy Director in Cardiff, with David Craddock as Manager and Rob Wyn Jones as Software Engineer. |

Dr Myra Wilson returns as a judge for the fifth series of BBC TV's Robot Wars. The show was broadcast on BBC Two, starting in 2000 and continuing into 2001. Myra has some photos from the series on her university web pages. |

Researchers from Aberystwyth, including Dr Mark Neal, took part in the first Microtransat competition. This was on a lake near Toulouse in France. This was in the years before the competition made transatlantic attempts started in 2010. |
